Experienced dog breeders can easily detect for signs of parasites. However, some dog breeds may not immediately show signs of parasites until they become very weak. Jena, 18 is one of the many teenagers who love puppies very much but not until her Shih Tzu showed signs of diarrhea did she know that it is already suffering from coccidia.
In truth, diarrhea is one of the common symptoms of parasitic infections that show when coccidia is already severe. In her case, the dog did not show any signs at all. Upon bringing to the vet, Jena found out that the coccidia was already severe and vet had to administer some coccidiostatic drugs to offset the symptoms of coccidia. From then on, she learned that coccidia do not easily die but pet owners can prevent it from happening again through sanitation.
According to the American Kennel Club, it is good to be mindful of the dog symptoms of an occurring disease. Aside from diarrhea which is of the most common symptoms of coccidia, the following are more symptoms of parasitic infection that Jena did not notice in her Shih Tzu.
- Loss of appetite
- Shih Tzu not drinking at all
- Abnormal temperature
- Pale gums
- Excessive drooling
Dogs can be very secretive sometimes. When they get sick, they most likely prefer to hide and show no dog symptoms at all. In this situation, most dog owners think that their dogs are out to play but they may be simply digging holes on the ground to hide. When this is not how your dogs usually act, bringing them to the vet is a very good choice for they might be sick.
